In December 2018, Waikato District Council railroaded through a farcical “hearing” for Mainland Poultry’s proposed “cage-free” mega egg farm in Orini. Locals were left angry and disappointed with the Council’s obvious bias in favour of Mainland Poultry.
In February 2019, our petition with over 30,000 signatures opposing the mega farm on animal welfare grounds and negative impacts to the community was presented to Waikato District Mayor Allan Sanson.
Despite the massive show of public opposition, consent was granted to build the mega farm. The Orini locals have not given up however and have lodged an appeal, meaning the case will go to the Environment Court.
We’ll be standing right next to the locals supporting them in their opposition. We are campaigning to end factory farming and we also don’t like to see mega corporations like Mainland Poultry steam rolling over local communities and the environment.
We will fight to the end to stop this horrendous, cruel, stinky industrial eye-sore from going ahead. Watch this space as the campaign continues.
